Sometimes the best fun is the simplest: a few friends, a patch of grass, a rope, or some stones. Whether you’re at a birthday party, on a weekend in the park, or just outside after school, these outdoor games for kids are guaranteed to be a hit.
Spring, summer (when it’s not too hot), fall (when it’s not raining), and even winter (when it’s mild)—there’s always time for outdoor play. We’ve curated a list of timeless children’s games that never go out of style. And don’t worry—if the weather turns bad, check out our list of 101 indoor games for kids. All you need is: friends! And maybe a water bottle and snack for after the fun.
1. Steal the Bacon
Split into two teams of at least four players. Each player gets a number (1, 2, 3…). The person in the middle holds a scarf or small flag. When a number is called, the two players with that number race to grab the flag and return to their line. If one catches the other before they get back, their team wins the point.
2. Dodgeball
Two teams face off across a makeshift field marked with jackets or backpacks. One team throws a ball to hit opponents without it touching the ground. If you’re hit, you’re “out” (or “jailed”); if a teammate catches the ball, you’re back in! Variations include circle dodgeball and goal dodgeball.
3. Four Corners
This game needs five players: four each take a corner, and one stands in the centre. Players try to switch corners without being tagged by the one in the middle. If you get caught or end up without a corner, you become the chaser.
4. Caterpillar Race
Great for parties or large groups. Divide into teams. Players line up without touching and hold a balloon or ball between them (no hands!). They must race to the finish line without dropping it. Teamwork and balance are key.
5. Sack Race
Who hasn’t done this one? Give each child a sack (pillowcases work too), set a start and finish line, and race by hopping. Guaranteed laughs!
6. Three-Legged Race
Pairs tie one leg together using a scarf or jacket. They race side-by-side toward the finish line. Balance and coordination matter more than speed!
7. Tag
A classic. One child counts to 10 and becomes “It.” They chase the others, trying to tag them. A base can be added—if someone touches it, they’re safe. The last one tagged becomes “It.”
8. Hopscotch
This universal favourite is played everywhere. Use chalk to draw boxes numbered 1 to 10. Toss a stone into the first box and hop through the course on one foot, skipping the box with the stone. On double boxes, you can use both feet. Repeat for each number.
9. Skipping Rope
Solo or in groups, skipping rope offers endless variations—basic jumps, crossovers, rhymes, and more. Challenge each other to new moves!
10. Red Light, Green Light (a.k.a. What Time is It, Mr. Wolf?)
One child turns their back and shouts “1, 2, 3… Red Light!” (or “What time is it, Mr. Wolf?”). Others move forward but must freeze when the leader turns. If you’re caught moving, go back to the start. First to reach the leader wins.
11. Broken Telephone
Everyone sits in a circle. One player whispers a message to their neighbour, who passes it on. When it reaches the last person, they say it out loud—it’s usually hilarious and completely different!
12. Water Balloon Piñata
Perfect for summer! Fill balloons with water, hang them from a tree or rope, and let kids take turns hitting them with a stick. Instant splash fun. Looking for more ideas? Check out our full article on water games for kids.
13. Obstacle Course
Use natural features or playground equipment: logs to balance on, walls to climb, bushes to crawl through, grassy hills to roll down. Adjust the difficulty for different ages. Whoever finishes first wins—no over-competitive parents allowed!
14. Tug of War
Two teams pull on opposite sides of a rope. Place a scarf at the midpoint and mark a line on the ground. The team that pulls the scarf past the line wins. Pure teamwork!
15. Blind Man’s Bluff
One child is blindfolded and tries to tag the others, who circle them, teasing and dodging. Whoever is caught becomes the next “blind one.”
Safety tip: Set clear boundaries and start by modelling the game
